sidered suppliers in Korea and Germany, but were concerned
about possible import delays.”
The custom-made cylinders have12-inch bores and
are mounted on each side of the stage, rod down, in
pairs, coupled to carriages on linear guide bearings.
Crew members lift the stage with oil only on the rod
side. Air on the blind side vents into an isolated chamber
for cleanliness and to contain any oil that may get
past the piston seals.
In addition to the cylinders, Parker supplied many
other components of the motion control system. The
lifting system’s power units include five 250-HP motors
with Parker PE145/105 series tandem axial piston
pumps providing a total output of 625gpm @ 1800 rpm
flow/pressure.
Once elevated, the deck tilts 100 degrees at a rate of
2.5 degrees per second. There are 214 axis of motion.
Tilt axis valves are used with 100-inch stroke cylinders
paired up for tilting the deck 100 degrees.
Parker D3FH valves are also used for fine positioning
of the Lift-Hold-Lower controls of deck’s vertical axis.
D81FH valves are used for 100-degree tilt control of the
stage. There are also thirty-four 50-gallon piston accumulators
(1700 discharge oil) with separate nitrogen
bottles (225,000 SCF). The filtration and purification
system uses PVS185 and Duplex Filtration Skid with
IL8 Series.
Cirque du Soleil Founder and CEO, Guy Laliberté,
describes KÀ as “...the most theatrical show we’ve ever
done.” It is scripted with a strongly defined cinematic
narrative, with clearly identified characters and story
arcs. The execution of that narrative called for more
technologically advanced visual effects than Cirque du
Soleil has ever attempted.
